1 John 2:18-23

1 John 2:18 is part of this passage.
18Little children, these are the end times, and as you heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have arisen. By this we know that it is the final hour. 19They went out from us, but they didn’t belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us. But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us. 20You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 21I have not written to you because you don’t know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the Antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23Whoever denies the Son doesn’t have the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.

Summary

It is the last hour; many antichrists have come, departing from the church to show they were not of it; believers have an anointing and know truth, while liars deny Jesus is the Christ—denying Father and Son.

Interpretation

“It is the last hour” interprets present conflict eschatologically. Many antichrists already operating fulfill the expected opposition. Last-hour living is discernment, not date charts. Ask what repentance would look like before Sunday ends: a confession, a reconciliation, a gift, a boundary, or renewed Scripture intake.

Departure reveals belonging: “They went out from us, but they didn’t belong to us.” Secession exposed empty membership. Perseverance with apostolic confession is a mark of true belonging. Teach this unit so hearers meet both comfort and command; the gospel always does both.

Believers “have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (or “you all know”). Anointing equips communal knowledge of truth against seduction—not omniscience, but sufficient gospel discernment. Measure success not by novelty but by whether faith, hope, and love grow more durable under pressure.

The lie has a christological core: denying that Jesus is the Christ. No one denying the Son has the Father; confessing the Son includes the Father. Father-Son relation is non-negotiable. Linger on the verbs and nouns the Spirit inspired; they carry the pastoral weight that slogans cannot.

Practice: when teachers redefine Jesus, treat it as antichrist trajectory, not harmless innovation. Hold the Son and you hold the Father; lose the Son and religious “God-talk” is empty. Trace how this paragraph serves the letter’s larger argument so you do not detach a favorite line from its neighbors.

Hold the center of this passage carefully: It is the last hour; many antichrists have come, departing from the church to show they were not of it; believers have an anointing and know truth, while liars deny Jesus is the Christ—denying Father and Son. That claim must govern both comfort and confrontation.
